Project management in oil & gas tends to involve large capital projects, complex stakeholder environments, and tight regulatory oversight. That experience is directly applicable to utility-scale solar and wind development, where projects routinely run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
Geology and reservoir engineering is the one area that genuinely doesn't transfer well. But geoscientists from oil & gas have found routes into geothermal energy, underground hydrogen storage, and carbon sequestration — all of which use geological expertise directly.
What Nobody Tells You: The Salary Reality
This is where people get surprised, and not always pleasantly.
If you're a senior petroleum engineer or a drilling superintendent, you're likely earning at the high end of what the oil & gas industry pays — and the honest truth is that equivalent roles in solar often pay less at the senior level, particularly in markets where fossil fuel companies are still competing hard for talent.
Entry and mid-level roles in solar tend to be competitive with comparable oil & gas positions. Senior specialist and leadership roles in utility-scale solar, offshore wind, and battery storage are catching up fast — but if you're currently earning a top-quartile oil & gas salary, expect a potential step-down when you first move across, with recovery as the sector matures.
The counterargument — and it's a real one — is job security. Oil & gas employment has been structurally declining in many markets. Clean energy hiring has been growing consistently. The long-term earnings trajectory in green energy looks considerably more stable than in fossil fuels, where cyclical layoffs are a feature, not a bug.
What Changes: The Culture Shift
This is the part that surprises people most, and it cuts both ways.
Clean energy companies — especially startups and growth-stage developers — tend to move faster, operate with leaner teams, and have less bureaucratic infrastructure than major oil & gas operators. For some people from fossil fuel backgrounds, this is energizing. For others, it's disorienting. The comfortable rhythms of a large operator with deep pockets and established processes don't always exist in the same way.
The mission-driven culture is also real, and it matters more than people expect. Working in an industry that's explicitly trying to decarbonize the grid — even if you personally approach it as just a job — tends to change how colleagues relate to the work. Meetings feel different. Recruitment conversations feel different. The social dynamic around "what do you do?" changes.
Whether that's a positive or a negative depends entirely on the individual.
The Certifications That Accelerate the Transition
You don't need to go back to school, but a few targeted credentials help signal that you're serious about the move:
Solar PV Associate (NABCEP) — the most widely recognized solar certification in the US, valued by employers across installation, project management, and design roles.
LEED AP — useful if you're moving into green building or sustainability consulting rather than pure energy generation.
Project Management Professional (PMP) — already widely held in oil & gas, and directly valued in renewable energy development.
Grid-scale battery storage certifications — still emerging as a formal category, but manufacturers like Tesla Energy, Fluence, and BYD offer training programs that carry real weight with employers.
The Roles That Are Easiest to Enter

If you're optimising for long-term career stability, sector growth, and the ability to work in an industry that isn't facing structural decline, the calculus looks very different.
