The people maintaining, managing, and operating these assets don't commute from Mumbai. They live nearby.
Where the Jobs Are Concentrating Right Now
Pune is emerging as one of the strongest green job markets in India — combining rooftop solar demand from its manufacturing base, EV engineering roles from the automotive cluster, and green building activity driven by its construction boom. Pune also benefits from Maharashtra's industrial corridor, which runs through multiple cities with significant solar installation demand.
Rajasthan — Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner — is hosting some of the largest utility-scale solar projects in the world. The operations and maintenance workforce for these installations is growing steadily, and project management, electrical, and civil roles are concentrated here.

A solar design engineer earning ₹6-8 LPA in a metro hub might see ₹4-6 LPA in a Tier II city for the same role. An ESG analyst role that pays ₹8-12 LPA in Mumbai might pay ₹5-8 LPA in Pune or Ahmedabad.
But there are two important counterweights to that differential.
Cost of living in Tier II cities is substantially lower than in the major metros — particularly for housing, which represents the largest single cost for most professionals. A salary that looks lower on paper often goes meaningfully further in practice.
