Carbon Trading Jobs Are Paying ₹35–100L in India. Here's How to Get In.

India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme is live and creating some of the highest-paying roles in the green economy. Here's what carbon trading jobs actually involve, what they pay, and how to break in.

Most people know that clean energy pays well. Fewer people know that carbon markets — a sector most Indians had barely heard of three years ago — are now generating some of the highest salaries in India's entire green economy.

Senior carbon traders and origination specialists in India are commanding ₹35–100L+. That's not a typo, and it's not limited to a handful of global finance firms. It reflects a genuine scarcity of experienced talent in a sector that has gone from nascent to mandatory in a very short period of time.

Here's what's driving it, what these roles actually involve, and — most practically — how someone from a finance, engineering, or sustainability background gets into this space.

What Changed: India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme

The catalyst for this shift is India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), which is now live across eight obligated industrial sectors.

The CCTS is India's domestic carbon market — a regulatory mechanism that requires high-emitting entities in covered sectors to either reduce their emissions or purchase carbon credits from entities that have reduced emissions below their targets. It's modelled broadly on the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, which is the world's largest and most established carbon market.

The launch of a mandatory domestic carbon market has done two things simultaneously: created significant corporate compliance demand (companies need people who understand carbon accounting, credit verification, and regulatory reporting), and created a trading market (companies with surplus credits need to sell them; companies short of credits need to buy them).

Both the compliance function and the trading function require specialist talent — and India doesn't yet have enough of it.

The Roles Being Created

Carbon Markets Analyst / MRV Specialist

MRV stands for Measurement, Reporting, and Verification — the process of quantifying and validating emissions reductions that underlie carbon credits. Entry-level MRV roles are the most accessible point of entry into the carbon markets space.

Salary: ₹5–12 LPA at entry level. Background: Environmental science, engineering, accounting, or finance. The core skill is data rigour — MRV is fundamentally a documentation and verification function.

Climate Change Analyst

A broader role that covers scenario analysis, physical climate risk assessment, transition risk modelling, and ESG reporting with a climate focus. In demand at consulting firms, banks, and large corporates.

Salary: ₹12.6–22.3 LPA (blended average across sources). Background: Economics, finance, environmental engineering, or sustainability.

Climate Risk Analyst (Banking and Consulting)

Banks and financial institutions are now required to assess and disclose climate-related financial risks under RBI and SEBI frameworks. Climate risk analysts build the models and frameworks that quantify these risks.

Salary: ₹12–22 LPA at mid-senior level. Background: Finance, quantitative economics, or risk management. Climate knowledge can be added through certification.

Carbon Markets Specialist

A more senior role focused on project origination, credit structuring, and market intelligence. Carbon Markets Specialists at consulting firms and trading houses advise clients on credit strategy and manage relationships with verification bodies.

Salary: ₹12–35 LPA. Background: Finance, project management, or technical environmental backgrounds.

Climate Finance Specialist

Focused on the intersection of climate and capital — green bonds, blended finance, climate investment structures, and sustainable debt frameworks. In demand at development finance institutions, banks, and large corporates with sustainability mandates.

Salary: ₹10–40 LPA. Background: Finance, investment banking, or development finance.

Carbon Markets Originator / Senior Trader

The highest-ceiling role in the guide. Originators identify and develop carbon credit projects; senior traders manage portfolios of carbon credits for profit. These roles require deep market knowledge, relationship networks, and — in the trading context — genuine financial markets sophistication.

Salary: ₹35–100L+. Background: Commodities trading, structured finance, or deep carbon markets expertise built over several years.

Why the Salaries Are This High

The ₹35–100L+ band at the senior end isn't aggregator noise. It reflects a real scarcity premium — the same dynamic that produces outsized salaries whenever a new, technically demanding market emerges faster than the talent pipeline can supply it.

India's CCTS is new enough that there are genuinely very few people in the country with deep, experienced carbon trading credentials. The people who have built that expertise — often through work on international voluntary carbon markets, the CDM, or in global carbon trading desks — are in a position to command significant compensation.

This scarcity will diminish over time as training programmes mature and more professionals develop relevant experience. The premium for being early is real, and it has a natural expiry date.

How to Break In: The Realistic Paths

From finance and accounting: Carbon accounting is essentially financial accounting applied to emissions data. Finance professionals who add GHG Protocol certification and some carbon markets knowledge are well-positioned for MRV analyst and carbon accounting roles. This is probably the lowest-friction entry path for people who aren't already in environmental fields.

From environmental engineering: Technical backgrounds are directly valuable in MRV, project verification, and carbon project development. The gap to bridge is typically financial and commercial knowledge — understanding how credits are priced, traded, and structured.

From commodities trading: People with commodities trading backgrounds (particularly energy commodities) have the most direct path to carbon trading roles. The market mechanics are similar; the underlying commodity is different.

From ESG and sustainability: ESG professionals who develop a specialisation in carbon accounting and the CCTS regulatory framework can move into compliance-focused carbon roles relatively directly. The analytical skills transfer; the carbon-specific technical knowledge needs to be built.

The Certifications That Matter

The carbon markets credential landscape is still maturing in India, but a few qualifications consistently appear in job descriptions:

GHG Protocol Corporate Standard — the foundational framework for carbon accounting. Understanding this is essentially mandatory for any carbon markets role.

ISO 14064 — the international standard for greenhouse gas quantification and reporting. Valued in MRV and verification roles.

Voluntary Carbon Markets credentials — offered by bodies like VERRA (Verified Carbon Standard) and Gold Standard, these are relevant if you're working with international voluntary carbon credit projects alongside the domestic CCTS.

CFA with ESG specialisation — increasingly valued for climate finance and carbon markets roles in the financial sector.

The Honest Assessment

Carbon markets is not an easy sector to enter from scratch. The roles that pay ₹35L+ require genuine expertise built over time — you don't get there from a two-week online course.

But the entry point is more accessible than most people assume. MRV analyst roles starting at ₹5–12 LPA are a realistic first step for finance, engineering, and environmental backgrounds with the right certifications. From there, the trajectory — in both experience and compensation — is steeper and faster than in most other green sectors right now.

India is building a carbon market from the ground up. The people who develop expertise now, while the market is still being established, will be worth considerably more in five years than they are today.
